Born in the Netherlands, Wietze Adema immigrated to Canada with his family, where he became a naturalized Canadian citizen. After graduating from Calvin University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, he obtained U.S. citizenship. In 1987 he received a MFA from Western Michigan University.
